According to Pythagorean Hylozoics, "Freedom is law and full freedom is the law of unity". But what exactly does this mean? A useful way to think about freedom is to picture a continuum with law-less-ness at one end of the continuum and conformity to law at the other end.
As we develop lifetime after lifetime, we began to learn from the consequences of our behavior. We learn for instance, that law-less-ness leads to dysfunctional behavior and gets us more of what we don’t want and less of what we do want.
Conversely, we learn that when we conform to the law we get more of what we want and less of what we don’t want. Ultimately, we learn that we are free to think, say, want, and do anything we please to the extent that we don’t interfere with others rights to the same freedom.
Therefore, through the progressive conformity to the law of freedom we ultimately achieve unity with all life as a natural consequence.
